5 New Year Resolutions for Art Lovers

12/29/2016

Art lovers know that art is transformative. It heals, it speaks, it unites, it expresses truth, it inspires. If you're an art lover, here are five ways to bring more art into your life -and the world- in 2017.

1. Become a member of a local museum

Charleston really is an art mecca. Become a member of our museums and get on the mailing list for local galleries - you'll get notices of new exhibits and openings, which essentially automates your art viewing and date night calendar.
  • Halsey Institute is $40 single or $60 for two
  • Gibbes Museum is $55 single or $75 for two
  • Redux Studios - $45 single or $75 family
  • The Southern - subscribe to their mailing list - events are free

2. Take a class

Sign up for a small group class at the Gibbes Museum or the exciting new Creative Arts of Mount Pleasant. You'll improve your own skills while making new art-minded friends.

3. Be More Creative

Go buy art supplies. Crayons. Paper. Markers. Paint. Glittter. Run down the ailes of Artists & Craftsman and fill a basket with whatever makes your heart sing. Create a masterpiece or just doodle in a bullet journal...it doesn't matter . Just make stuff.

4. Start a Collection

First, get yourself a big bowl of popcorn and Netflix Herb & Dorothy - the story of how two average people created one of the most important art collections of all time. Then, create an art budget for yourself and start collecting. Several local artists, including Art Mecca artists, create small works that start at $25.

5. Get Inspired - Stay Inspired

Make enjoying art a part of your daily routine. Curate an inspiring Pinterest page, buy coffee table books, go on First Friday art walks, pop in galleries while you're running errands. The more you love art, the more it will love you back.
